A physiotherapist is involved in the management at many different stages of the patient’s pathway and experience, from diagnosis through to discharge and/or long-term management.

The treatment approach at the RNOH historically comes from the work of Dr Min Metha, using side shift corrective exercises. This is combined with modified curve specific postural retraining exercises. Patients are also given advice and treatment on breathing techniques for rib expansion, core strengthening and balance-proprioceptive training.

We follow consensus guideline advice promoted by SOSORT (an international group on conservative management).

We use up-to-date research advice and work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team to produce the best results for the patient.

Patients most commonly seen as outpatients include:

  • Minor to moderate curves below 40 degrees in patients without a complex or family history of surgery, or those who may decline surgery who are not at risk of further progression or further health-related problems.
  • Adult scoliosis, de novo degenerative who have pain and small structural deformities, not previously treated by a scoliosis or specific conservative treatment approach.

What treatment you can expect:

  • Support surgery
  • Core strengthening

An example of instructions for simple exercises for scoliosis:
