Duke of Gloucester is a ward inside the Stanmore Building with 16 ensuite rooms and four bays, each with four beds. When recovering from surgery or having investigations performed, you will want care, rest and comfort. Whether you are here for a day or a number of weeks, we want you and your family to feel well informed and understand what is happening. We aim to provide a clean and safe environment to maintain your privacy and dignity.

We hope you will not hesitate to ask for as much information and advice as you require about any aspect of your care here on Duke of Gloucester Ward.

Due to the increasing number of COVID-19 positive people in the general population, we are imposing visiting restrictions at RNOH as of 27 March:

-1 visitor at a time for adult/child patients

-visiting times: 12:00-14:00 / 17:00-19:00

-no visitors to ITU, respiratory ward (4th floor Stanmore bldg), or SCIC. Nurse in charge can decide in exceptional cases e.g. end of life care

-no visitors under 16 or over 70

-no visitors with underlying health conditions (severe breathing, cardiac, renal, diabetes, cancer immunocompromised)

-all visitors must maintain min of 2 metre distance from patients, staff whilst in hospital

-all visitors wash hands

  • Lunch approximately from 12.15
  • Supper approximately from 17.15

Beverages are served at interval throughout the day

Phones/internet

Phone calls and internet access can be made via the bedside entertainment system. Patients are allowed to use their mobiles, and some patients bring in laptops / DVD players which they watch while using headphones. You can connect to the WiFi service for patients

Shower rooms

Each single room has an ensuite bathroom with toilet. The four bedded bays have their own bathroom and toilet.

Nurse’s handover

This takes place at 07.30 - 08.00 each morning and 19.30 – 20.00 each evening at the patient’s bedside and the patient can be involved in this discussion.

Doctor's ward round

Large round on Friday morning. Other teams at other times during the week.


Smoking is strictly prohibited in all areas.
