Radiology Fellowships

The successful MSK Radiology fellow will participate in an intensive training programme in all aspects of diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal imaging, including plain films, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, CT and MRI, Interventional procedures taking place within the department include osteoid osteoma radiofrequency ablation, arthrography, percutaneous bone and soft biopsy and complex spinal intervention. There will be a graduated responsibility with the fellow initially observing their allocated consultant reporting scans and procedures, and they will then progress to performing procedures under direct supervision. By three months, the fellow should be able to undertake routine interventional procedures with indirect consultant supervision. Reporting of cross-sectional imaging will always be double-read by a supervising consultant which provides an excellent forum for teaching and direct feedback. There are no on-call responsibilities for the post-CCT fellowship.

There will be opportunities to attend weekly musculoskeletal MDT meetings; daily spinal MDT meetings including spinal deformity, degenerative spine, neurosurgical spine and spine infection, whilst there are also sarcoma, foot and ankle, shoulder, juvenile hip, hip debris, joint reconstruction, rheumatology and pain MDTs throughout the week.

Fellowship training is enhanced by close collaboration and interaction with the orthopaedic and spinal surgical teams and members of the rheumatology and paediatric Departments, facilitated by these MDTs. This will include opportunities to attend surgical teaching clinics, theatre sessions and to collaborate on research.

The fellow will be involved in a variety of novel techniques and will be exposed to wide-ranging pathologies. There is an active teaching programme with monthly journal clubs, discrepancy meetings and opportunities for Orthopaedic SHO and SpR teaching on internal and national courses. There will be an expectation to organise and teach on relaxed quarterly evening ‘MSK Symposiums’ aimed at radiology registrars in and around 2B exams with an interest in MSK imaging.

There will be opportunities to attend the Stanmore led imaging courses at the Royal College of Radiologists.
