Mr Ashley Simpson is a dual fellowship-trained Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in adult and paediatric brachial plexus and peripheral nerve injuries.
He undertook his medical degree from St John’s College, University of Cambridge, via St Bartholomew’s and The London School of Clinical Medicine. Following completion of his medical studies he worked at the Astronaut Training Centre for the European Space Agency in Cologne, Germany, before returning to the UK to begin his orthopaedic career.
He trained on the Percivall Pott Trauma & Orthopaedic Programme in London, with a focus on peripheral nerve injuries and soft tissue reconstruction of the upper and lower limbs. He completed the Perth Sports Surgery Fellowship in Western Australia followed by the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Upper Limb Fellowship, where he was appointed as Consultant before moving to RNOH.
Ashley’s current research interests include: the role of artificial intelligence in clinical decision-making; imaging and diagnostics in peripheral nerve injuries; and defining glenoid morphology in birth-related brachial plexus injury. He reviews for Injury journal and the Journal of Experimental Orthopaedics.
He is a member of NHS England Specialised Services Commissioning Work Group, establishing the national pathways for brachial plexus and peripheral nerve injuries. He is also a member of the Shoulder and Elbow subcommittee of SICOT. He is supervisor for both the national and international Peripheral Nerve Injury Fellowships and faculty member for the Executive Fellowship in Surgical Leadership at Kings Health Partners.
