We have assessed more than 1000 patients with metal-on-metal bearing hips and performed revision operations on more than 500 patients. This clinical activity has contributed to our research, which in turn has directed our clinical decision making and development of guidelines for patients referred to us. This is an excellent example of a clinical translational research programme.
Our implant retrieval programme
200 orthopaedic surgeons from 19 countries have contributed more than 3,500 failed hip components.
The London Implant Retrieval Centre (LIRC) is funded from a variety of sources including nine implant manufacturers. LIRC was set up in 2008 by two of our consultant orthopaedic surgeons, Professor Alister Hart and Professor John Skinner. It is based at the Centre for Biomedical Engineering at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Brockley Hill, Stanmore, Middlesex, HA7 4LP.
