Team Stanmore has been crowned champions of the Inter Spinal Unit Games (ISUG) for the second year running, after decades without victory.
Since 1988, Stoke Mandeville Stadium has hosted the WheelPower Inter Spinal Unit Games, a weeklong rehabilitation event where over 100 patients and 60 staff from 14 UK spinal units gather at the birthplace of the Paralympic Movement for sport, activity, and discovery.
Participants receive expert coaching and demonstrations from top wheelchair athletes and coaches in more than 20 sports.
This year’s squad of five recently injured patients, led by LSCIC physiotherapists Jessie Robinson and Ānya Farrow-Ullah and supported by rehabilitation practitioners Jacqui McKeown and Peter Parrott, tackled a dazzling range of wheelchair and para sports.
From 25m freestyle swims to handcycling sprints, archery, wheelchair basketball with GB Paralympians, and field events like javelin and shot put, our team’s determination and camaraderie shone through.
Highlights included Ken’s surprise swimming success, Fred’s racing canoe dominance, and Jason’s emotional first 30kg bench press.
“We’d like to thank everyone for all the incredible work you do to make Stanmore what it is, which inspires our patients to push themselves out of their comfort zones and explore the possibilities of life after injury. It has been incredible to see our team members throw themselves into every sport and not only surprising themselves with what they are capable of, but proving to themselves what they are able to do despite the hurdles they have had to overcome to get where they are now. The self belief they have found in this is phenomenal.“ Jessie Robinson and Ānya Farrow-Ullah (LSCIC Physios)
"Thanks for the lovely memories. Thanks for giving me a lift. I wish the games were longer because I enjoyed every single moment and every single laugh. The trust you had in us to select this wonderful team. I will do this over and over again. The celebration will continue. This is one of my happiest highlights in my life. Thanks for your encouragement and belief in us to bring the trophy back where it belongs." Kenneth Amoah
