Following extensive preparations, training and a huge amount of teamwork, Epic, our new electronic health record (EHR), officially went live at RNOH yesterday morning, Sunday 23 November, as part of an Epic Connect model with UCLH.
Epic replaces paper records and many of the current systems at RNOH with a single, fully integrated clinical record. It means that staff can always access the complete, accurate and up-to-date information needed to ensure the best care for patients. New hardware and software will help us to speed up routine tasks such as observations, and real-time data will help our teams to make informed, instant decisions to ensure outstanding patient care.
As part of the Epic implementation RNOH has launched MyCare, an app and online service for patients allowing them to securely view and manage information about their health and care at RNOH. EpicCare Link, a new way for RNOH to receive tertiary referrals, has also been launched as part of the Epic programme.
Prof. Paul Fish, RNOH Chief Executive commented: "A huge thank you to our brilliant staff who have helped us get to this milestone. Their hard work and commitment have made this day possible, and I know that patients have been kept at the heart of the programme throughout. Epic will transform the way we deliver care and ensure we provide the best possible acute neuro-musculoskeletal medicine for years to come.”
Dr Lila Dinner, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Medical Officer said: "This is a very exciting day for RNOH. We are incredibly grateful to Epic who have worked tirelessly to support both ourselves and UCLH and to our UCLH colleagues whose expertise in designing, implementing, and using Epic, following their own deployment of the system in 2019, has been instrumental to the success of this programme. Today’s go-live is just the start of an exciting next chapter for RNOH and I'm looking forward to continued success in our partnership with UCLH to the benefit of patients at both trusts.”
David Probert, CEO at UCLH said: “UCLH and RNOH can now work more closely together than ever before, improving patient safety and delivering truly integrated care. Having all the data in one place will also enhance our research capabilities, helping us drive innovation and improve outcomes for patients. We want to thank the incredible teams at both trusts for making this possible. This collaboration will continue for years to come, benefiting patients and staff.”
Dr Gill Gaskin, Medical Director, Digital Healthcare, UCLH said: "I would also like to thank everyone involved for their patience, support, and hard work. Implementing a fully integrated electronic health record in one go-live across a whole organisation can be extremely challenging at times. In the end this is all about improving safety and care for patients and their families and that is incredibly rewarding.”
We are asking visitors to the hospital to please bear with us as we adapt to using this new system. We have prepared extensively and trained thousands of staff, but visitors may notice some initial delays and longer waiting times in the first few weeks as we adjust to new ways of working. We are working hard to keep any disruption to a minimum and thank you for your understanding.
