Information around who is most at risk and tips for coping in hot weather are available on the NHS Heatwave: How to cope in hot weather page
Below are some of the simple things you can do to keep cool:
- Stay hydrated - drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine, alcohol and hot drinks.
- Pull down blinds, switch off lights and use fans (where appropriate). During the day, close windows to stop hot air entering.
- Open your windows as soon as the outdoor temperature drops below your indoor temperature. Creating a cross-breeze by opening windows on opposite sides of the property will help flush out warm, stale air and bring in cooler air.
- Keep out of direct heat - stay in shaded areas when possible, wear cool clothing, sun cream and a sun hat.
- Avoid exercise or any activities that make you hotter.
Please check on anyone you think may be at risk from the heat, including:
- older people, especially those aged 65 and over
- babies and young children aged 5 years and under
- people who have serious long-term conditions
- people who live alone and may be unable to care for themselves
If you or someone else feels unwell with a high temperature during hot weather, it may be heat exhaustion or heatstroke. More information of the signs to watch for can be found here
