New metastatic spinal cord compression service
The Trust has recently opened a new Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression (MSCC) surgical service to complement those already in place across London Cancer. This ensures that oncology teams are able to access an urgent opinion from a consultant spinal surgeon at any time, and that those patients who are suitable for surgery can be transferred and treated quickly.
Metastatic spinal cord compression is a rare complication of some cancers, which requires urgent assessment and management. Spinal surgery is appropriate for a small number of these patients.
The development of this service has been supported by the London Cancer Acute Oncology Service Expert Reference Group. One of their priorities is to bring improvements to the MSCC pathway across London Cancer.
