The RNOH has an established role in providing education for medical and other health professionals and is a major contributor to NHS education and training, both nationally and regionally, as illustrated below:

Medical Education
One in five orthopaedic consultants in London train at the RNOH.
Over 50 specialist registrars specialising in orthopaedics will be trained at the RNOH each year and over 30 Senior House Officers.

The RNOH is also popular with overseas consultants wishing to extend their knowledge and specialism.

The Education Centre organise a variety of courses for Senior House Officers, Specialist Registrars, GPs, consultants and other medical career grades including:

  • Surgery of the adult foot and ankle
  • Hip and knee arthroplasty
  • Basic fracture management including casting techniques
  • Casting techniques
  • Advanced trauma and life support (ATLS)
  • Basic and intermediate knee arthroplasty
  • Controversies in hip arthroscopy
  • Basic sciences in orthopaedics for the FRCS (Orth) exam
  • Surgical Approaches to the Foot and Ankle
  • Various GP Seminars

Our consultants contribute to undergraduate courses organised in association with the Institute of Orthopaedics and Musculo-skeletal Science.

The Education Centre runs a one day course for lower and upper sixth form students who are considering studying medicine entitled "So you want to do medicine?"

Our team of clinical nurse educators, mentors and clinical nurse specialist facilitate learning opportunities for our nursing team and circa 100 pre-registration students on a yearly basis. Newly qualified nurses are supported in making the transition into nursing through our structured Preceptorship programme. We aslo facilitate and teach in house courses which augment the learning experience of the MDT: spinal cord injury related courses, medicine administration, mentor updates, preceptee & preceptor forums, clinical induction, workshops, bespoke training and 1:1 teaching. Healthcare support workers can access the Apprenticeship Programme, Care Certificate Training and English & Maths classes.

With funding from Health Education England, staff nurses can access post-registration courses towards completion of specialist degrees.

We also welcome clinical observers, with interest in orthopaedic and spinal cord injury nursing care and management, on honorary contracts from centres around the UK and abroad.

Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy placements equivalent to about 48 students.

The Education Centre also runs the following annual courses:

  • Future of shoulder instability.
  • Shoulder rotator cuff
