A Freedom to Speak Up Guardian is an impartial support person who helps healthcare workers raise concerns about patient safety, bullying, or workplace issues when they feel unable to use standard routes.

Their primary purpose is to foster an open, transparent culture where workers are supported, thanked for speaking up, and protected from detriment.

The concept originated in England following the Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust public inquiry. Today, all organizations providing services under the NHS Standard Contract (including NHS Trusts, primary care providers, and independent sector healthcare organizations) are required to have Freedom to Speak Up Guardians.
