This highly engaging one-day course has been developed at RNOH in response to the growing need for healthcare professionals to confidently assess and manage patients’ mental wellbeing within acute and orthopaedic settings.

MACOS offers a dynamic and interactive learning experience through a blend of structured facilitation, role-playing, actor-led simulation scenarios, and reflective debriefing. The course is designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, equipping participants with practical clinical skills they can apply directly in their roles.

The course aims for attendees to grow and develop practice and confidence in key areas, including motivational interviewing, recognising and supporting patients presenting with psychological distress, and developing the ability to have positive and effective conversations with patients where a diagnosis of Functional neurological disorder (FND) may be present.

• Full day of supported role playing, including actor-led simulation, with expectations of attendee participation in all simulated activities
• To be able to effectively and appropriately undertake a risk assessment in relation to a mental health presentation.
• To improve listening skills and ability to apply motivational interview techniques when goal setting with patients
• To engage and screen patients presenting with psychological distress.
• To be able to effectively and appropriately undertake a risk assessment in relation to a mental health presentation
• To effectively manage discussions relating to diagnosis and management with Functional Neurological Disorder

Mental health in Acute Care & Orthopaedic Settings (MACOS) Simulation Training is a one-day interactive simulation training day designed to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and confidence to assess and manage mental health presentations in patients with musculoskeletal diagnoses and functional neurological disorders.
