Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, NHS Trust

The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital aims to be the specialist orthopaedic hospital of choice by providing outstanding patient care, research and education.

Safeguarding of Children

The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust continues to ensure that all patients including children are cared for in a safe, secure and caring environment. As a result, a number of safeguarding children arrangements are in place.

These include:

  • Meeting statutory requirements in relation to Criminal Records Bureau checks - all staff employed at the Trust under go a CRB check prior to employment and those working with children undergo an enhanced level of assessment.
  • Ensuring all the Trust Child Protection policies and systems are up to date and robust and are reviewed on a regular basis, ultimately by the Trust Board. (The last review occurred in September 2009 and the next review is scheduled for December 2011).
  • Having in place a process in place for following up children who miss outpatient appointments within any speciality to ensure their care and ultimately their health is not affected in any way.
  • In addition, the Trust has a system in place for flagging children for whom there are safeguarding concerns at a weekly professionals meeting.

All eligible staff have undertaken relevant safeguarding training and this is regularly reviewed to ensure it is up to date. The Trust has a robust training strategy in place with regard to delivering safeguarding training.

89% of eligible staff are up to date on level one training - the target is 80%
90% of eligible clinical staff are up to date on level two training - the target is 80%
90% of eligible clinical staff are up to date on level three training - the target is 80%

(Please see attached data on configuration of staff training, Appendix 1).

The last training review occurred in November 2009 and will be reviewed again in June 2010. An action plan has been formulated to meet the training requirements at Level 3, please see Appendix 2.

The Trust has named professionals who lead on issues in relation to Safeguarding. They are clear about their role, have sufficient time and receive relevant support, and training, to undertake their roles, which includes close contact with other social and health care organisations. The number of named professionals is two and are as follows:

Nurse 0.4 WTE
Doctor 0.2 WTE
Administration support 0.2WTE

Dr. Benjamin Jacobs is the Executive Director lead for safeguarding children and chairs the Children's Services Strategic Group Committee which reports to the board on safeguarding children.

The Trust Board takes the issue of safeguarding extremely seriously and receives an annual report on safeguarding children issues incorporated in the Children's Services Annual Report. The last Annual Report occurred in September 2009 and the board paper relating to this can be found in the Trust Board Minutes which are available in the relevant section on this site.

The Trust Board has robust audit programmes to assure it that safeguarding systems and processes are working. The last audit was undertaken in December 2010.

Plan to reach compliance on staff training on child protection

All health care organisations have a particular responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The RNOH therefore has a responsibility to have robust child protection systems in place. This includes ensuring that there are designated child protection staff, up to date policies/procedures and a rolling programme of training for all levels of staff. The RNOH needs to ensure that all staff that work with or provide treatment to children, adolescents and their families have experience and or training in child protection.

Outlined below are the main areas of concern and the actions which will address the situation.
