Patients should make their own way to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust at both of our sites in Stanmore and Bolsover Street, London W1.
For more information on how to get to both sites please go to How to find us.
If getting to hospital is a problem, the forms of help that are available depends on whether the patient has
- EITHER a medical need for transport
- OR it is difficult for them to meet the cost of travelling.
Medical need for transport
If the patient has a genuine and demonstrable medical condition that means that they need patient transport to attend the hospital for treatment, and has no other means of getting to hospital, it can be arranged by the Trust.
Download a copy of our Patient Transport Assessment Scheme leaflet for further information about how to apply.
Patients will travel alone as escorts are only permitted if the patients' medical condition dictates, or if the patient is under 18.
Please note that if you are eligible for patient transport you can only take one piece of luggage in, and out, of hospital.
Eligibility for NHS transport is not provided on the basis of your financial status or the distance you have to travel. Some patients can, however, get assistance with the cost of fares.
Individual patients' travel needs will be reassessed during the course of their treatment at the RNOH, and individual transport eligibility will be regularly reviewed.

Help with travel costs
The hospital travel costs scheme exists to help patients who cannot meet the cost of travel to hospital. The finance department is able to provide information about who qualifies for help and can reimburse patients who are entitled.
Please call 020 8954 2300 or e-mail BookingPatientTransport@rnoh.nhs.uk for more information.
Patients in receipt of Income Support, Income Based Job Seeker's Allowance, Tax Credits or Pension Credits automatically qualify for full or partial refunds, but must show recent proof of the benefit they receive (dated no more than three months prior to the appointment date). Refunds will be based on the most cost effective mode of public transport available.
If patients use a private car, petrol costs may be claimed (and car parking charges where unavoidable). This claim can only be up to the total amount of the same journey by public transport. The transport department can tell you the mileage rate for petrol costs for private transport.
Special arrangements are also in place to help patients with all or part of their travel costs if they are on a low income. Proof will need to be shown when making the claim. A copy of the H2 (full help) or H3 (partial help) certificate will be required as proof. The certificate will state who it covers and how long it lasts.
