The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital aims to be the specialist orthopaedic hospital of choice by providing outstanding patient care, research and education.

Education

The RNOH has an established role in providing education for medical and other health professionals and is a major contributor to NHS education and training, both nationally and regionally, as illustrated below:

Medical
One in five Orthopaedic Consultants in London train at the RNOH.
Over 50 Specialist Registrars specialising in orthopaedics will be trained at the RNOH each year and over 30 Senior House Officers.

The RNOH is also popular for overseas Consultants wishing to extend their knowledge and specialism.

The Education Centre organise a variety of courses for Senior House Officers, Specialist Registrars, GPs, Consultants and other medical career grades including:

  • Surgery of the adult foot and ankle
  • Hip and knee arthroplasty
  • Basic fracture management including casting techniques
  • Casting techniques
  • Advanced trauma and life support (ATLS)
  • Basic and intermediate knee arthroplasty
  • Controversies in hip arthroscopy
  • Basic sciences in orthopaedics for the FRCS (Orth) exam
  • Surgical Approaches to the Foot and Ankle
  • Various GP Seminars

Over 700 doctors attended our postgraduate courses in 2006/07.

Our Consultants also contribute to the undergraduate courses organised in association with the Institute of Orthopaedics and Musculo-skeletal Science.

The Education Centre also runs a one day course for lower and upper sixth form students who are considering studying medicine entitled "So you want to do medicine?"

Nursing
Pre-registration students of circa 100 per annum
Post registration training of circa 50 per annum

The Education Centre also runs a variety of courses and conferences each year including:

  • Tracheostomy Study Day
  • Spinal Injuries Conference
  • Scoliosis Study Day
  • Paediatric Orthopaedic Conference

Therapies
Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy placements equivalent to about 48 students.

The Education Centre also runs the following annual courses:

  • Future of shoulder instability.
  • Shoulder rotator cuff
