The Artwork by Gudawer Kalirai
Since graduating in 1995, Gudawer has won prizes for his street photographs, taken around India, and his abstract portraits. He has exhibited his work in various galleries in London, including the Photographers Gallery but for the past seven years he has specialised in corporate commissions - using the most advanced digital techniques, he has created work on surfaces as diverse as canvas, aluminium and acrylic. Amongst others, Gudawer has completed commissions for hospitals, financial institutions, offices, hotels and Government buildings including the Treasury.
His fascination with photography began early and the quality and flexibility of the medium drives his creativity. Influenced by painting - in particular, Abstract Expressionism - Gudawer creates digital 'paintings' with a strong emphasis on layering imagery. By manipulating the colour, texture, light and shape of these layers there is often interplay between intention, accident and chance which creates images that are fluid yet have a sense of order and control.
By composing and layering his photographic images digitally, he is able to enhance and develop his ideas, concepts, compositions, and subject matter without losing his initial attraction to any given theme. This process forms the basis for the wide range of work in his portfolio - cityscape montages, tree works, landscapes as well as the more abstract 'horizon' images. His style consistently creates stunning visuals that can be displayed on a huge scale, up to 8 metres wide, on all types of surfaces and also as moving imagery on large digital screens.
Architectural Montage in acrylic
We asked Gudawer to create a piece that would remind us of the local streetscape and link us to the past history of Fitzrovia at a time when we were leaving behind an elegant 1920's building to move into a very contemporary building. If you look carefully you will see the BT Tower, Regent's Park Mosque and the statutes of the girl and boy that used to grace our front entrance and will be moved to our Greenwell Street entrance in 2010.
Children at play on Primrose Hill in acrylic
For this piece we asked Gudawer to create a work of art that was aimed at our younger visitors but that would remind us all of the wonderful parkland that surrounds us at Regents Park and Primrose Hill. Gudawer has used photographic work with graphic art to create a unique piece for us capturing both the beauty of London parks but also the energy and vibrancy of play.
